Historical Background and the Significance of the Divisional Secretariat- Dickwella ;
Divisional Secretariat of Dickwella is located in the southeastern part of the Matara District. And which has the spectacular longest 16 km beach in Matara District. This Divisional Secretariat Dickwella starts from Beliwatta junction near the 7th mile post on the Matara-Hambantota main road and extends to Kemagoda near the 16th mile post. Dickwella Divisional Secretariat is bounded by Kirinda Puhulwella Divisional Secretariat on the north, Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat on the west, Beliatta and Tangalle Divisional Secretariats on the east, and the Indian Ocean on the south.
The area of the division is 51.2 sq. Km (5120 hectares) and it covers about 4% of the land area of Matara district. There are 31 ancient shrine places located in this area. Historical Kurumbura Rajamaha Viharaya, Vavurukannala Buduraja Maha Viharaya, Thanumpatha Rajamaha Viharaya can be considered as excellent among these. Ancient ruins of these temples can still be seen in these places. (Gold and gem carved Buddha statues, ancient palm leaf manuscripts, treatises, dolas, ancient knives etc.)
